According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), all of it land.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,250 people, 513 households, and 319 families residing in the borough. The population density was 599.4 people per square mile (230.9/km²). There were 550 housing units at an average density of 263.7 per square mile (101.6/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.24% White, 0.16% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.
There were 513 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the borough the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
